thank you, Karen, yes, i am hungry to gain a better understanding on what we are standing under (oh, i didn't even mean to say it that way, but that's a nice wordplay.)
Thank you for these thoughts. I’m also struggling with how to help people see an inclusive progressive future where all voices and welcome and nurtured. There is so much hurt and it’s felt by people that don’t have my privilege. I read a meditation by LeGuin she left us after the 2016 election I’ll find and share. It helped me see the POWER of letting go of the battle.
thank you for this link ... yes, she's very much getting at something that's been bothering me ... and she's saying it really well ... not only that the right frames everything as a "fight," but that those who oppose such things seem to have little imagination to do anything but mirror there approaching by framing their approach as a "fight."
fighting is not imaginative, but as i think i hear you saying ... i also don't blame the people who've been marginalized for wanting to fight.
it's complicated. gonna take a lot of people figuring out how to "hold space," for all the complexity.
I am a brand new subscriber.Thank-you for your words of wisdom. I have been interested in Girard's ideas for several years now. What worries me is that people like Peter Thiel, authoritarians, monarchists and reactionary Catholics seem to love his ideas. I am confused by this. Any ideas?
Rio. Thanks. Good question … and adjacent conversation … kinda reminds me of 2Timothy 3:5 idea of “having a form of Godliness, but not the fullness, thereof.” (Sorry, that’s probably a KJV version which demonstrates my age. Not that I’m as old as the King James language! Ha.)
Anyhow, the point here is that any of us can get ahold of something substantive and use a measure of it to achieve certain agendas. In such instances, what might be revealed is less a lack of insight that the original idea provided, and more a lack of character within the person trying to use the insight for their own gain.
Girard would be the first to say that to stand outside of the theory; to try and use it for a particular gain is to wind up being used. According to Girardian Cynthia Haven, Girard once told a skeptic “You will see the success of my theories when you recognize yourself as a persecutor.”
Idk about the people or the groups you’ve mentioned … beyond my ability to weigh in on their motives, but I know for me, in the context of this political crapshow that we are in … that I what I keep being invited to do, consistently, is to see myself as yes, imaginative, worthy, gracious and empowered, but also to be humble about how quickly I can deceive myself … be open to the possibility that I’m projecting some of my own interior dysfunction back into the whole ruckus. I’m convinced that that’s not going to help.
I try not to blame others for doing that, for they have possibly had it worse than me, but for me, love is inviting me to be cautious with that approach.
Hmmm… I unsure if I’ve really answered your question, but it was fun rambling on anyhow and thanks for the subscribe. I hope others are mimetically influenced to do the same. :)
David Brooks of the New York times also has researched the Trump voter scenarios
